With the passing of Quincy Jones, (11.03.24) so many of his contributions to the music world, come to mind. We have him to thank for incredible projects including Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall, Bad and the best-selling album Thriller. But Jones’ background prior to producing and becoming a music mogul was in another genre. Time Magazine named Quincy one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century. Quincy’s song Soul Bossa Nova made it’s way into pop culture history when Mike Meyers selected it to be the theme song for the Austin Powers movie franchise. It’s one of those songs we all know, without knowing much about it. It appeared on Quincy’s 1962 Big Band Bossa Nova album. Meyers’ familiarity with the song as a result of it being used in a Canadian game show, led to the perfect “Powers,” pairing.
